“When I begin a painting, I don’t always know how it’s going to finish…As the ideas come along, it’s best not to argue with them even if there are elements that will need to be eliminated at the end…Too much thought can interrupt the process…If you begin with an idea and force it into the painting, the effect will seem stiff” – Louis Maqhubela (Martin 2010:21).
Roll On was painted after Maqhubela returned to South Africa to visit the country of his birth post-apartheid. These paintings were still abstract, but frequently referenced African songs, rituals, imagery, names and places (Martin 2010:21). In this artwork distinctive African forms in bright colours appear in the abstract field.
