Marilyn Martin (2010:21) in the book, A vigil of Departure – Louis Khehla Maqhubela – a retrospective 1960-2010, stated that in spite of the trials and challenges Maqhubela experienced in South Africa as an black artist during the height of Apartheid, and living abroad in exile in London, his “art is characterised by a profound humanism, inner joy and affirmation of life that transcends technique and analysis; they spring from a deep spiritual and metaphysical well.”
