Catherine’s art is constructed from a wide range of multicultural influences. He references totemic Oceanic and Caribbean art, popular culture, and post modernism. Through his work he tries to recreate multiple identities that reflects identities that do not conform to Western paradigms (Friedman 2000:77).
In the artworks, Look and learn and Talking heads, the bright use of colour as seen in traditional Oceanic and Eastern culture creates an apparent freedom. The heads resemble masks used in ritual ceremonies and becomes representational of myth and of an archetypal figure that articulates an existential conflict (Friedman 2000:78).
