Pemba painted his most well-known “township” paintings in New Brighton one of Port Elizabeth’s townships where he lived with his wife and 5 children. In these paintings the influence of Social Realism can clearly be seen. Especially with the reference to impressionism. This movement originated in the 1930s in America and it explored themes such as poverty, political corruption, and injustice. This movement was also known for its naturalistic and quasi-expressionist painting style as well as its more general renderings of everyday life. George Pemba should be regarded as South Africa’s most important Social Realist Painter.
