“I grew up in Newlands Avenue with its beautiful Oaks. Our home stood in a forest…trees, nothing but trees, in a world reeling under the northwester. I love the way it twists and bends the trees because it lends them character” Gregoire Boonzaier (Bekker 1990:9).
Boonzaier is known for his paintings and drawings of trees. Bleek winter oaks, umbrella pines, storm-battered Cape trees with branches ripped off by the wind. He loved the texture of trees explained by Martin Bekker (1990:40) as “spidery branches like embroidery against the grey skies.”
