In 1923 Pierneef visited South West Africa (Namibia). This visit had a profound effect on his understanding of light and colour and formed the foundation for many of his later works. Pierneef explained that “the desert, the drought, the peculiar translucent quality of light” were inspirational (Nel 1990:60).
