Professor P.G. Nel (1990:148-149) explained Pierneef’s clouds as follows: “Just as one speaks of the ‘Pierneef tree’, the ‘Pierneef cloud’ is an expression which has specific connotations… At times these heavy cloud masses are highly stylised or they form a stylistic unity with the landscape. On other occations they aquire almost anthropomorphic traits.” All the representings of clouds in Pierneef’s paintings represents the incredible cloud buildup found on a hot summers day in the Highveld just before a rainstorm erupts.
