Hazel Friedman (2000:79) made the comment that “Catherine is not afraid of exploring the uncharted turf of the self.” He does not see his work as representing Freudian-Jungian discourse, but he acknowledges the role myths and archetypes play in his work. Polarities in the form of dark and light (literally and metaphorically) can be regarded as one of the main themes in his work. Using colour, tone, and his metamorphic figures he explores the terrain of the divided consciousness. For the viewer to fully appreciate Catherine’s work it is necessary to have a dark sense of humour.
Friedman (2000:77) perfectly explained this by stating: “The works need no higher translation, no cultural commissars to convey meaning for they are painfully comprehensible. They tickle our funny bone – but a discomforting itch remains.”
