Walter Battiss was known for his use of an intuitively modernist approach that he applied to intensely personalized myths (Standard Bank Gallery 2005:17). Through using the dual materials, technologies, and aesthetic ideas of modern European art, combined with the complex visual grammar of rock art. He was considered a “non-conformist for whom art was a site of creative freedom and aesthetic exploration” (Standard Bank Gallery 2005:22).
In the painting, Four horses, this duality is very present. The work reminds one of a Marc Chagall’s paintings with a slight reference to the iconic Der Blaue Reiter horses with the two Bushman figures in the foreground.
