In 1966 Présence Africaine had a conference in Dakar, Senegal. Sekoto attended this conference. It was his first visit to another African country. Sekoto and Wilson Tiberio, a Brazilian artist friend, stayed on after the conference to see more of the way of life in Senegal (Lindop:95).
“I could understand the life of Dakar better than the life of Paris. The sun in Dakar was bright, and the colours were warm. Life in this city was not too different from the life I knew when I was young. But in one way the life was different: the main religion in Dakar is the Islamic religion” – Gerard Sekoto (Lindop:97). Sekoto and Wilson stayed in Dakar for a year during which he made several artworks that was exhibited at the Daniel Sorano Thèâtre. This exhibition was a big success (Lindop:101).
