The 1940s was a difficult time in the artist’s life. He lost his beloved godfather Anton van Wouw, a dear friend Grosskopf, and his first wife Agatha Delen. In 1943 he suffered his first heart attack, and Marita his only child from his second wife Mariane Francis Schoep, got married and left the country.
During this time in Pierneef’s life he travelled quite extensively, mostly to rest because of his deteriorating health (Nel 1990:93).
