His favorite subject was the Bushveld and its thorn trees. The Bushveld was also the theme of an important exhibition that was held in August 1942 at the Lidchi Art Gallery in Johannesburg (Nel 1990:93). The Star newspaper wrote about these Bushveld paintings as: “…a picture one can walk into and explore; it is the Bushveld” (Nel 1990:93).
In 1936 Pierneef expressed the wish: “Bury me under a Camelthorn tree, with its straight, manly character guarding me and its roots deep in the soil of Africa” (Nel 1990:109). Sadly, this wish was never granted, but Pierneef’s soul lives on in the Bushveld through the numerous paintings that depicted the Camelthorn trees.
